SAO PAULO, Brazil -- Brazil and other commercial powers are seeing a "window of opportunity" to resume the World Trade Organization talks in September, Brazil's chief trade negotiator said Tuesday.
Brazil, one of the world's leading agricultural exporters, has been keen to restart the so-called Doha round talks since they collapsed amid disagreement over proposals for import protection mechanisms in developing countries.
"Political problems prevented an agreement at that moment, on that issue" said Roberto Azevedo.
"My impression was that if we had four or five more days in Geneva we would solve that problem."
Brazil's Foreign Minister Celso Amorim said a world trade deal is still possible if world leaders move quickly despite the failure of the WTO talks last month, in an interview with French daily Le Monde published Tuesday.
Azevedo said Brazil continues to negotiate bilateral agreements with South Africa, the Gulf states and India.
