GLOBE leads eco-drive against single-use plastic, donates ‘eco-bricks’ to communities
Globe launched its environmental campaign to lessen plastic pollution Saturday, by turning plastic waste into “eco-bricks.”
Residents of Brgy. Upper Bicutan, Taguig, participated in Globe’s “Plastic Xchange Program,” the company’s eco-drive to discourage the use of single-use plastic, as part of its corporate sustainability programs for the environment. Seven selected barangays in Metro Manila joined the event. The one-day program collected over 230,000 pcs of plastic.
Participants who donated 30 pieces of any single-use plastic received 100 Globe rewards points each. The collected plastic materials will be turned into “eco-bricks,” which will be donated to the participating communities.
Alex Penolio, chairman of Brgy. Upper Bicutan, said the program helps people understand the detrimental effects of excessive plastic trash in the environment.
“We do regular clean-ups or declogging of our drainage canals, and plastic comprises much of the garbage that we collect,” Penolio said.
“We will use the bricks in building more facilities in the barangay,” Penolio added, speaking about the “eco-bricks” to be donated for the project.
For the eco-drive, Globe partnered with Green Antz, an Ayala Land firm that converts plastics into eco-bricks as construction materials.Participating communities included Barangay Palatiw and San Antonio in Pasig, Barangay South Signal Village in Taguig, Barangay 455 in Manila, Barangay Magallanes in Makati, and Welfareville Compound in Mandaluyong.
