MANILA, Philippines ? Customers of the Manila Electric Co. should brace themselves for higher electricity bills this month, as the generation charge rose by 44 centavos to P6.0962 per kilowatt-hour.

In a disclosure to the Philippine Stock Exchange, Meralco said the increase in the generation charge was due to the high cost of electricity purchased from the Wholesale Electricity Spot Market (WESM).

The generation charge is the second-highest recorded this year, next to the level of P6.77 per kilowatt-hour recorded in April.
