Asian shares to edge higher on US gains

WELLINGTON, Australia -- Asian shares are likely to inch firmer as US stocks posted a late rally to end in positive territory, after computer maker Hewlett-Packard defied the economic gloom with a strong result.

HP's result offset a fall in Citi shares to a 13-year low on fears the widespread job cuts would not be enough to revive the fortunes of the US's second-largest bank.

The US dollar rose, as investors were still reluctant to buy riskier assets, despite the gains made by equities.

Commodity prices mostly dipped lower, with oil dropping to a 22-month low on recession fears.
