Broadway to dim lights for Liz Taylor

NEW YORK– Broadway theaters will dim their lights Friday in remembrance of Hollywood goddess Elizabeth Taylor, whose long career included spells acting in New York theaters.

“The Broadway community mourns the loss of Elizabeth Taylor, legendary stage and screen star,” a statement from the theater industry group said.

“The marquees of Broadway theatres in New York will be dimmed in her memory on Friday, March 25th, at exactly 8:00pm for one minute.”

Taylor, who won two Oscars, died Wednesday in Los Angeles. She was 79.

Although best known for her screen roles, she also worked in theater and made famous performances in movie versions of stage classics, including Tennessee William’s “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof.”

Taylor appeared on Broadway in the revival of Lillian Hellman’s “The Little Foxes,” earning a nomination for the 1981 Tony Award for Best Actress in a Play.

In 1983, she was producer and star of Noel Coward’s “Private Lives” opposite her former husband, Richard Burton.

“With her remarkable talent and extraordinary beauty, Elizabeth Taylor lit up the Broadway stage the same way she lit up the silver screen,” said Paul Libin, head of The Broadway League.
