Duterte dares Mislatel: Break the telco duopoly

MANILA, Philippines — President Rodrigo Duterte on Monday challenged Mislatel Consortium, the third major telecommunications player in the Philippines, to break the duopoly of PLDT Inc. and Globe Telecom.

“Let me take this opportunity to pose this challenge to Mislatel: Break the prevailing duopoly in the telecommunications industry and fulfill your commitment to provide better telco services to our people,” the President said in his speech during the awarding of permit to operate to the new telco in Malacañang.

Earlier, the President had repeatedly expressed dismay over the services of the existing telco providers in the country.

The President gave Mislatel its Certificate of Public Convenience and Necessity (CPCN) in a ceremony in Malacañang.

The consortium, headed by Davao businessman Dennis Uy, is composed of Mindanao Islamic Telephone Co. (Mislatel), Udenna Corp., Chelsea Logistics and Infrastructure Holdings Corp., and China Telecom Corp. Ltd.
