MANILA, Philippines – Investments in smart grid technologies are gaining momentum in Iloilo City as it powers its first unmanned substation.

MORE Electric and Power Corp., the sole power distributor in Iloilo City, said the substation’s launch supports the shift to a smart grid and addresses the growing demands in its franchise area.

The facility is powered by a supervisory control and data acquisition system that allow operators to manage and monitor it remotely.

Equipped with smart electronic devices, the company said it could monitor the load flow, voltage levels, and equipment health in real-time.

“This digital integration offers critical benefits for power stability, as automated fault detection allows the system to isolate issues and restore power in seconds,” it said in a statement.

Other industry players, such as Manila Electric Co. and the National Grid Corp. of the Philippines, have also modernized their operations with unmanned substations.

In March, the House of Representatives approved on third and final reading a proposed measure that seeks to expand the franchise area of MORE Power to cover the municipalities of Igbaras, Tubungan, Oton, Tigbauan, Guimbal, Miag-ao, and San Joaquin. /pai
