Sports cars and dream machines may be the main attraction when going to Manila International Auto Show, especially given this year’s “Life in the Fast Lane” theme, but practicality often gets a boost when one sees all the work-related vehicles that are highlighted on the show floor.

This year, Ford’s biggest ever Ranger will be having its debut at MIAS. Boasting a clean-sheet design that encompasses the brand’s latter kinetic styling merged with its Built Ford Tough image, the Ranger features a huge version of the company’s three-bar grille, a taste of its massive 1850 mm width and up to 5359 mm length. Reportedly engineered with Asia’s city streets in mind, the Ranger includes quick steering for easier maneuverability and parking.

The massive size enables a cabin that can carry five in car-like comfort. The Ranger has been cited for its quietness, an unusual attribute that will help its double utility as a leisure vehicle. Ranger’s engine lineup will include a 3.2-liter inline-five good for 200 hp and 470 Nm, and a 2.2-liter inline-four with 150 hp and 350 Nm. The engines feature variable geometry turbochargers. Transmissions are state-of-the-art, too, with six cogs on both the manual and automatic variants.

United Asia Automotive Group will be launching the Foton Thunder pickup. The Thunder will be powered by a Cummins 2.8-liter diesel engine with direct injection, common-rail injection and turbocharging. The engine will output 360 Nm. Thunder will be available in four-wheel drive versions. The pickup will reportedly feature carlike interior trim and ergonomically-designed cockpit. Load capacity is 1.1 tons.

Families looking for a comfortable mode of transport have been opting for diesel power for relative savings at the pump. Ford is putting up another attractive option, with the front-wheel drive Explorer Eco-Boost, powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged gasoline engine. With 240 hp and 366 Nm on tap, the engine should be sufficient for propelling the Explorer’s mass. Ford quotes fuel mileage at 11.90 km/liter.

On the opposite side of the fence, Chrysler’s Town & Country Limited Edition is turning to diesel power. The seven-seater luxury-oriented minivan features a multimedia entertainment system with user-loadable hard disc drive, video screen, and nine-speaker audio system. The rear seats can fold flat into the floor, to convert the van from passenger to cargo use. The sliding doors and liftgate feature power opening and closing.

If smaller utility is in the cards, the Subaru XV will debut at MIAS. Slotting in below the best-selling Forester SUV, the XV will feature a smaller footprint yet adequate interior room-best in class, according to Subaru. With an innovative CVT, the XV has been lauded for its fuel economy and responsive driving manners.

As part of the expansive exhibition area, MIAS will encompass the World Trade Center, two adjacent airconditioned tents, and the Philippine Trade Training Center for the Petron MIAS Custom and Classic Car Competition and the Car of the Year award winners. MIAS exhibitor Isuzu Gencars will be showcasing the D-Max pickup at the tent annex as part of its utility vehicle lineup.
