Megaworld to set up P1.2-B museum in Cebu province

MANILA, Philippines — Megaworld Corp. of billionaire Andrew Tan will build a P1.2-billion museum within one of its township projects in Cebu province to promote the country’s history and provide a “creative avenue” for locals and tourists to connect.

The listed developer on Thursday said the Mactan World Museum inside the 30-hectare Mactan Newtown in Lapu-Lapu City would open in the next three years.

It is set to feature a visual retelling of key historical events, such as the arrival of Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan, the Manila Galleon Trade, and the Battle of Mactan in 1521, according to the company.

“Being at the center of the Mactan Newtown, this museum will provide locals and tourists with a creative avenue to connect, share interests as a community, expand knowledge, and form a deeper appreciation not only for Mactan but also for our nation’s history,” Graham Coates, head of Megaworld Lifestyle Malls, said in a statement.

The museum would feature “an extensive collection” of pieces curated by Dannie Alvarez, president of the Alliance of Greater Manila Museums and former head of the committee on museums of the National Commission for Culture and the Arts.

There will be five main exhibit galleries on the second floor featuring artifacts, replica mementos, and interactive displays of historical events between the Philippines and Spain, according to Megaworld.
