SteelAsia to install 1.9-MW solar rooftop in Bulacan plant
MANILA, Philippines —SteelAsia Manufacturing Corp. said it will install new solar power equipment in one of its facilities in Bulacan, displacing 2.3 million kilograms of carbon dioxide every year from the country’s largest steel producer.
The steel company said a new 1.9-megawatt solar rooftop project will be installed in its Meycauayan plant, one of its two facilities in the province, through the agreement signed last Tuesday with French multinational firm TotalEnergies.
SteelAsia president Andre Y. Sy said this is the company’s latest move to help decarbonize and protect the environment while expanding its operations.
To date, the company has six plants in the country, two of which are in Bulacan, and one each in Cagayan de Oro, Davao, Cebu and Batangas.

The steel company said about 80 percent of their energy supply come from geothermal power sources, adding that it has also invested in automated furnaces.
Steel Asia said these furnaces reduce emissions and ensure optimal burning, thereby saving fuel by up to 30 percent compared to other furnaces.
For its expansion, SteelAsia’s said its current project involved the construction a section mill in Lemery, Batangas to produce H-beams, which are used for infrastructure and large angles for transmission and cell towers.’
“These steel products are 100-percent imported like most others that are used in construction and infrastructure projects,” the company said in a statement.

The company added that it aims to build a full-fledged steel industry that will replace imports, generate jobs, and create new business opportunities in the Philippines.
