Corporate green ideas turned into centerpiece

The dimsum delights at Li Li Restaurant in Hyatt Manila captivate the senses.  The dining centerpiece intrigues as it is made of quite an unusual material—ballpens.

The hotel’s theme “Tinsels and Pencils of Christmas” makes use of the pencil and ballpen to create artistic elements made by furniture designer Milo Naval who believes in the power of education.  He also hails from the province of Sorsogon, Bicol and the materials will be donated to students of the Divine Healer Academy run by The Healing Servants Foundation Inc.

The grand lobby centerpiece that looks like a modern rendition of furniture design is made purely of pencils.  Other artworks in the hotel are also on sale.

While most table centerpieces have traditionally occupied a decorative purpose, the idea of recycling re-usable materials has, in recent times, come in vogue with the green thinking bandwagon.

Hyatt Manila provides another possibility—that of using the centerpiece as an opportunity to highlight the company’s corporate social responsibility programs or earth-friendly projects. Now, the centerpiece can be used for other purposes than merely adorning the table.  Likewise, materials are concocted with a re-usable end in mind.

The use of unique materials also provides an avenue for Filipino artists to display their talents.  It often takes the most unusual raw materials to bring out an artist’s real ingenuity (or the lack of it).
