Inspired by the growing public awareness of the dangers posed by plastics to the environment and the warm reception its sustainability efforts have received from its clientele, Puregold is expanding its “No Plastic Use” campaign nationwide.

The “No Plastic Use” campaign, rolled out in July 2022, initially covered only Puregold stores in the National Capital Region and only every Monday.

Under the campaign, initially dubbed “Walang Plastik Mondays”, Puregold encourages shoppers to bring their own ecobag when shopping on Mondays. In return, the supermarket chain gives a one-peso cashback for every eco bag used by Perks and Tinadahan ni Aling Puring members.

The campaign was a success. On its first month, Puregold has saved more than 110,000 plastic bags and that was in the NCR alone.

This has prompted the supermarket chain to bring its “No Plastic Use” campaign nationwide and increase the covered days to two—Mondays and Wednesdays. With this move, Puregold is projecting another 30 percent reduction in its plastic bags purchases from year-ago level.

“We are now expanding Puregold’s ‘No Plastic Use’ nationwide, and extending this to include Mondays and Wednesdays starting Sept. 26, as we continue to work on operating more sustainably,” says Puregold President Vincent Co.

The plastic reduction program forms part of Puregold’s efforts not only to cut its plastic bag purchases but also to getting shoppers, particularly those who buy in bulk, make changes in the way they consume goods and increasingly conscious of the dangers posed especially by single-use plastics to the environment.

As part of its sustainability strategy, Puregold is also reviving its recycling program this September 2022. Under this program, Puregold encourages its customers to exchange their recyclable wastes for essential grocery items in designated Puregold stores.
