Seven years ago, Grab started out as a humble ride-hailing app with an equally humble objective to provide a solution to the growing and urgent need for more transport options in the Metro. Today, it has evolved and expanded into the leading everyday super app in the Southeast Asian region – addressing people’s everyday needs from transport and food delivery to parcel service and digital wallet.

The celebration of its seven-year milestone revolves around the magnanimous concepts of SHARING and GIVING BACK.

Nourishing small players and partners

Grab recognizes the invaluable support given to them by their mentors, financial backers, partners, and customers when they were still a start-up. Now that they are in a secure position to pass it forward, it wants to share with micro-entrepreneurs and their driver-partners the resources, capabilities, and networks that they have managed to gain along their journey.

Though Grab’s various financial literacy programs, Grab helps its driver-partners and their families to develop basic know-how on financial capacity and management. The wives of the drivers are empowered with financial literacy education via Grab’s Misiskolar Program, while the driver-partners themselves are motivated and incentivized through Ka-Grab Rewards Incentive Scheme and the Grab Academy.

Positively impacting communities

Grab is strengthening its resolve to continue doing good for the communities that it serves and is widening the scope of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives to education. As Grab Philippines President Brian Cu aptly puts it, “As a socially responsible corporate citizen, Grab is mindful that giving back to the community is as important as providing the best services as an everyday super app. We want to be able to create a lasting impact on the lives of our fellow Filipinos and we will continue to do so, as we have done in the past.”

To help them in championing their advocacy for education development in the country, Grab is partnering with Hope, a social enterprise that creates and sells bottled water to enable them to build public school classrooms and provide a decent learning environment to thousands of children around the country. Grab – through its GrabRewards platform, is raising money to specifically to build two classrooms for kids in Ama-Talo Elementary School in Pangasinan.

Likewise, Grab partners with Teach for the Philippines, a for-purpose, non-stock, non-profit organization that enlists some of the country’s most promising young leaders to teach for two years in public schools throughout the Philippines. Grab is also raising funds to support six teaching fellows in Marikina City for the school year 2019-2020.

These past few months have seen the country struggle through some tough challenges, and Grab, through its intensified social good initiatives, has readily extended a helping hand to various communities, groups and individuals.

Through GrabIgib, Grab provided free water delivery services in Marikina and Mandaluyong when the water crisis broke in the eastern corridor of Metro Manila in March. Grab also provided free transportation services to the residents of San Fernando, Guagua, Porac, and Floridablanca who were affected by the devastating earthquake that rocked Pampanga in April. Through its GrabCare Package, it also offered financial assistance to its driver-partners who got injured the said calamity. Likewise, through #OneDestiNation campaign, Grab provided assistance to Comelec during the midterm elections in May by launching initiatives on voter education, both online and offline. Lastly, Grab strengthened its partnership with the Philippine National Police – Highway Patrol Group (PNP-HPG) by training its driver-partners to become road safety marshals that will help spot and report road-related incidents to the local authorities.

According to Cu, “These partnerships have helped us make an impact in the lives of many people in just the first few months of 2019. We are excited to do more good things moving forward.”

Launching new Super App services (transport, lifestyle and financial)

With strengthened partnerships, Grab is geared to introduce several new services and innovations to elevate the overall Grab experience in the Philippines. “We are turning our super app vision into a more concrete reality. Soon, Grab users can use the Grab platform for more services that will help them meet their daily needs,” Cu said.

Through Bus Marketplace, Grab will partner with bus operators and shipping lines in Metro Manila to provide an on-demand ticket booking system for bus and ferry rides. Through GrabExpress, Grab has struck a regional partnership with Ninja Van to enable inter-city parcel and courier delivery. Further, Grab partners with HOOQ, a leading Southeast Asian video-streaming provider, to enable users to stream on-demand video content. Through Grab’s partnership with SM Cinemas, Grabbers will be able to use the app to book for their movie tickets in advance with the soon-to-be-launched Tickets service tile. And, through Grab’s partnership with Agoda and Booking.com, Grab app users will be allowed to book their accommodations for their holidays using the new Hotel tile.

Aside from all these, Grab app users will soon have access to BillsPay feature, a solution that allows GrabPay account holders to use their digital wallets to pay for their utility bills. Through its partnership with the SM Group, Grab is bringing GrabPay outside of the Grab app and into the SM Group’s wide portfolio of merchants. Currently, Grab is securing necessary documents to introduce Grab Insurance, a digital insurance platform that will allow drivers to purchase insurance, view their policies, and make claims online. Finally, through its collaboration with Citi and Mastercard, Grab will soon launch its prepaid card linked to GrabPay.

Cu added that “We are building our super app vision through partnerships. We recognize that Grab would only be limited on what we do best, but there are those that could provide best in class services, making partnerships necessary for us to realize our vision of becoming the region’s largest super app.”
