Only one telecommunications group has qualified in the initial review for the third telco player in the country, the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) announced Wednesday.

The consortium of China Telecom and Dennis Uy’s Udenna Corp. and Chelsea Logistics Holdings Corp. was the only participating group that passed NTC’s preliminary selection process.

Uy is a businessman based in Davao, hometown of President Rodrigo Duterte.

According to the selection committee of the NTC, the LCS-TierOne Consortium and the Philippine Telegraph & Telephone (PT&T) Corporation failed to submit their participation security and certification of technical capability, respectively.

In the absence of the said documents, the committee said both telco groups have been disqualified from the bidding.

However, the NTC said the groups may still file within three days a motion for reconsideration on the ruling of the selection committee.

Both LCS-TierOne Consortium and PT&T Corporation said they will file the necessary motion of reconsideration.
