Keeping it dry and fresh

The downpour often gives families an excuse to remain indoors, where it is usually dry and cozy.

While the rains can sometimes be pleasant and dreamy, it can also mean muddy, sloshy and sloppy homes. It’s also hard to snuggle comfortably when there is a lingering musty smell in your dwelling place.

Here are a few tips to keep your homes smelling fresh and clean all throughout this damp monsoon season.

  1. Check for leaks

Thoroughly check your home. If there are cracks on the roof and the walls, the rains could only make them worse, and could lead to dampness which can then be a breeding ground for moss and fungus. To prevent other organisms from inhabiting your home, paint the walls with waterproofing coat. Also, do check the rain pipes for any blockages. Make sure that water doesn’t stagnate there. Instead, allow the water to flow freely back to the ground.

  1. Switch on the diffuser

This is perhaps the easiest way to get rid of odors. All you have to do is fill the diffuser with water, pour in a few drops of essential oils, and switch it on. A fine mist is created and is carried throughout your house. Not only can diffusers deodorize your home but it can also improve your health.

Clove essential oil offers antioxidants and antiparasitic properties while chamomile is considered to be a powerful anti-inflammatory agent. Lavender is best known to decrease anxiety and has a healing effect. A drop of eucalyptus is said to contain natural antibiotics and can clear your nasal passages as well.

  1. Cleaning is a must

If you have wooden furniture in your home, it’s best to protect them from the harsh rains. Move all wooden furniture a couple of inches away from the windows and doors. If wet, give it a dry wipe to keep moisture off. Extra emphasis should be given on cleaning wood furniture during the rainy days. The floor should be mopped with a cleaner that leaves behind a fresh scent. Avoid using carpets and rugs during the wet season as these attract dust and undesirable odors.

  1. Houseplants as purifiers

Potted plants are not only refreshing to look at but they also act as perfect purifiers. Placing plants in your homes can improve the circulation of oxygen, making you healthier in the process.
