Developer sees much potential, beauty in ‘City of Smiles’

There definitely is more than a million and one reasons why it is called the “City of Smiles.”

Bacolod, a highly urbanized city that is the capital of Negros Occidental, is one of the more popular tourist destinations in the county today, landing on many travelers’ bucket list on the back of its unique and festive attractions, as well as its people’s gentle demeanor and natural warmth towards guests.

Considered to be the most populous city in the Western Visayas, the City of Smiles also serves as the door to the sugar-rich towns of Negros Occidental and is currently home to a thriving economy where much opportunity for further trade and investment is seen, and that which many investors are hoping to tap.

And just earlier this year, the City of Bacolod was thrust on the spotlight anew after being identified as one of the country’s so-called next wave cities, which meant that it was among the top 10 cities outside Metro Manila deemed as a viable, alternative location to set up shop.

The curious balance there is that despite the continued modernization of the city and its rising popularity among businesses, Bacolod has managed to preserve its wealth of tradition and culture, the stunning, majestic beauty of its natural resources, and that alluring charm that continued to attract droves of tourists and investors year after year.

So here are but a few of the million reasons that made the City of Bacolod truly endearing, worthy of people’s utmost attention and the investor’s keen interest.

FESTIVALS

Bacolod City is highly famous for it MassKara Festival, held every third week of October.

Tracing its beginnings in the early ’80, the said festival was meant to pay tribute to the hardships endured by the people Negros.

Today, the celebration is always highlighted by the famed MassKara streetdance competition, wherein participants wear colorful masks and dance to the upbeat sound of the Latin-inspired music.

The said festival gives both foreign and local visitors the privilege to party and revel in the festivities for 20 long days.

FOOD, GLORIOUS FOOD

If there’s one thing that makes the City of Bacolod a vacationer’s paradise, it would be its selection of unique, delectable dishes. This so-called “Manokan country” has long been famous for its mouthwatering Bacolod Chicken Inasal, delish cakes from Calea, and an assortment of seafood dishes.

FAMOUS LANDMARKS

A visit to the city is never complete without immersing oneself in Bacolod’s centuries-old culture and tradition as seen through its famous landmarks: beautiful 19th century mansions of sugar barons, historical monuments, and churches built in the Spanish era.

One of the must-see churches is The San Sebastian Cathedral in downtown Bacolod, originally built as a small chapel in 1882 using coral stones from Guimaras Island. Beside the cathedral is the Palacio Episcopal or Bishop’s Palace which was constructed in 1830.

Other “musts” in your church tour should also include the Sta. Clara Chapel which features a large mural mosaic of Barangay Sang Birhen, a local version of the Virgin Mary made of 95,000 pieces of polished shells; and the San Antonio Abad Church, which showcases national artist Solomon Saprid’s masterwork dubbed “The Risen Christ.”

Also a sight to behold is the Provincial Capitol Building, built in 1927 using the Neo-Roman architectural design of American Daniel Burnham and executed by Filipino Architect Juan Arellano.

ARTS AND CRAFTS

The City of Bacolod is a treasure trove for any art collector as it has a number of shops that sell vintage items and authentic antique pieces, some of which were even acquired from Bacolod’s prominent families’ fine collections.

While some are on sale in the city’s antique shops, there are those that can be viewed from the city’s many ancestral homes and the private collections of various individuals.

If you have a penchant for local items, good buys would include shell craft, ceramic wares, woodcrafts, and the “hablon”, a locally developed fabric which was the rave in the ’60s.

And where to find these? The ANP Negros Showroom is a one-stop shop selling export-quality products such as garments, gift items, decorative objects, handicrafts, shell craft and pastries.

Also worth a visit would be the Bacolod Shellcraft and Artwares, which has an extensive collection of Philippine and Negrense shells that are made into exquisite mosaics, house accessories and gift items.

NEXT WAVE CITY

Bacolod City has been identified as one of the “next wave cities” by the Department of Science and Technology-Information and Communications Technology Office, IT and Business Process Association of the Philippines and Leechiu Property Consultants.

This only meant that that city is considered a prime prospective hub that can serve as an alternative location for IT-business process management companies seeking to expand outside of the metro, given its ability to enable and support the entry and growth of outsourcing firms.

Bacolod was among the 42 locations that were assessed based on talent availability, infrastructure, business environment and cost.

But prior to being identified as a potential investor’s haven, one company has already seen the huge potential in Bacolod, such that it has long poured in fresh capital to set up real estate developments in the city—even before it caught the attention of multinational companies and national players who are all coming in to set up shop in the area.

They also have good local hotels and the peace and order situation was never an issue.”

Sta. Lucia sees the City of Bacolod as a perfect investment hub for a number of reasons and this is why it was one of the first national property developers to enter this market to create high quality projects in the city.

“I’ve been in Bacolod for quite sometime already but I only have one project, Manville Royale which is near the old airport. But with the demand and the city’s growing potential, the company has decided to expand and create a new project in Silay which is close to Bacolod’s new airport,” Robles shared.

“We are currently on the planning stage but we intend to start with the construction next year, and this one will also be a lake development. You see, our expertise is really on land development.  Before, we would develop big tracts of raw land into residential projects. But now, we try to reinvent and keep up with what the market wants and what it demands. And with some of our bigger properties quite far from the city proper, we are aware that we have to be able to establish something unique so people would see the value of what we offer,” he explained.

Such is the reason Sta. Lucia Land creates developments with attractions such as lakes so that people would go and be able to try new activities.
