MANILA, Philippines—The Bureau of Customs (BOC) has sought the assistance of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) in returning to Canada 50 container vans of garbage, which were misdeclared as scrap plastic for recycling.
BOC personnel intercepted the shipments packed with the waste materials at the Port of Manila recently.
“We would like to respectfully seek your assistance for the immediate reexportation of the seized hazardous substances to its origin,” Ariel Nepomuceno, customs deputy commissioner for the enforcement group, said in a letter to Environment Secretary Ramon Paje.
The BOC filed with the Department of Justice on Thursday a complaint against the importer of the waste materials.
Facing complaints for violation of the Toxic Substance and Hazardous Wastes and Nuclear Wastes Control Act of 1990 (Republic Act No. 6969) are Adelfa Eduardo, owner of Chronic Plastics, a firm based in Canumay, Valenzuela City, and the company’s licensed customs brokers, Leonora Flores and Sherjun Saldon.
