World Bank raises Philippines growth forecast

MANILA, Philippines—The World Bank raised its 2012 growth forecast for the Philippines Thursday following a stronger-than-expected start to the year, but warned of headwinds from the crisis in Europe and a Chinese slowdown.

However, it said the momentum comes amid weakening global economic growth that would affect key export markets and cause job losses in electronics and other manufacturing industries.

The economy grew 6.4 percent in the three months to March, after an anemic 3.9 percent expansion for 2011.

“We have revised our growth forecast upward to 4.6 percent from 4.2 percent for 2012, reflecting higher growth in the first quarter,” the bank said in a quarterly country report.

“However, this projection does not yet factor in a possible intensification of the crisis in Europe and a further slowdown in China.”

It said domestic demand would be boosted by higher government spending and robust private consumption backed by remittances by a huge Filipino overseas work force.

The bank expects global growth to soften to 2.5 percent this year from 2.7 percent in 2011, hitting key Philippine export markets the United States, the eurozone, Japan and China.

Did WB just reverse the 6.4 to get 4.6?

4.6% growth will be very boring. it will only be slightly better than last year’s 4.0%

Financial markets will be very disappointed if growth ends up below 5.0% again this year.

The government should implement all these project before 2016, coz after that who knows we will be back to the corrupt old days.

The National Government clearly needs to work faster on
infra spending to generate jobs and to encourage the private sector to spend
more. There is no time to waste. Otherwise we will start falling behind our
neighbors again after a momentary spurt of growth.

The BSP also needs to cut interest rates some more.  The PHL economy does not need low inflation now if
the cost of achieving it is another lacklustre growth performance like the 4.7
per cent WB is forecasting here. We need the cut to stop the PHP’s massive
appreciation against the Euro, the Rupee and the Rupiah which are now all 10%
    more competitive than PHP.

We will lose a lot of jobs here and abroad if this continues
and this administration will be just like any of the previous ones no matter
how well it improves governance. Governance in Europe is strong but because of
poor economic management, political problems tend to emerge and persist. The likes of Berlusconi
are back in Italy. The Nazis are gaining support in Greece and other parts of Europe. Do we want the Arroyo’s to return to power as well?
