Visayas grid faces yet another yellow alert

MANILA, Philippines – The outages of three major coal plants continued to strain the Visayas power supply, prompting another yellow alert on Wednesday.
The National Grid Corp. of the Philippines placed the Visayas grid under yellow alert from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. as available supply risked falling short of demand.

As of 8 a.m., available capacity stood at 2,542 MW, against a peak demand of 2,362 MW.
The Department of Energy expects Panay Energy’s Unit 3 to return by July 3, while Therma Visayas’ two units are due back in August.

Heavily reliant on power imports from Luzon and Mindanao, the Visayas has faced tight electricity supply since May.
A yellow alert signals thin power reserves, leaving the grid vulnerable to disruptions if another plant goes offline. /pai INQ
