NGCP places Visayas grid under yellow alert

The Visayas power grid will be placed under a yellow alert from 2 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Friday as thin power reserves and projected high demand continue to strain supply.

In an advisory, the National Grid Corp. of the Philippines (NGCP) attributed the yellow alert to the unavailability of several large coal-fired power plants, including TVI Units 1 and 2, PEDC Unit 3 and KSPC Unit 1 amid high demand forecast.

The grid operator added available capacity was pegged at 2,523 megawatts (MW), only slightly above the projected peak demand of 2,476 MW.

The Visayas grid has faced recurring supply challenges in recent months due to prolonged outages at several generating units.

NGCP said 30 power plants were on forced outage as of June 19, while 13 others were operating at reduced capacity. These conditions have rendered a total of 995.7 MW unavailable to the grid.

A yellow alert means supply can still meet demand but warns that plant outages may cause brownouts. /pai INQ
