Philippines completes streamlined licensing for nuclear energy

MANILA, Philippines – The Philippine government has finalized an approval process for nuclear power projects as it advances plans to integrate the technology into the country’s electricity generation mix by 2032.

The Department of Energy (DOE) on Tuesday said it had completed the licensing and permitting flow chart across government agencies for nuclear power plants.

The licensing roadmap, it noted, was crafted after meeting over a hundred stakeholders from the private sector and academia as well as 24 government agencies.

This was done through the Nuclear Energy Program Inter-Agency Committee (NEP-IAC).

DOE director Patrick Aquino, who heads the NEP-IAC secretariat, said proposed nuclear power projects would undergo seven regulatory approvals.

These include business registration and foundational permits as well as environmental clearances and siting requirements.
