NGCP puts Visayas, Mindanao power grids on ‘Yellow Alert’

MANILA, Philippines — The Visayas and Mindanao grids will be placed under a “Yellow Alert” on early Friday evening as the market sees more power plant outages amid higher demand. This is according to the National Grid Corp. of the Philippines (NGCP).

In an advisory, NGCP said the yellow alert would be in place from 6 pm to 8 pm.

A yellow alert means that the supply of electricity can still meet demand, but brownouts may occur if and when a power plant breaks down.

The system operator said the Visayas grid has an available capacity of 2,569 megawatt (MW), while its peak demand is 2,449 MW.

The Mindanao grid, meanwhile, has 2,827 MW of capacity available, with peak demand reaching 2,667 MW.

The grids’ reserves of power generation capacity are thinning because there are a “significant number of plants on unplanned/forced outages and de-rated capacities,” the NGCP said.

In Luzon, the power grid is operating normally.
