Luzon, Visayas grids on yellow alert on May 14

MANILA, Philippines — The Luzon and Visayas grids will be placed on yellow alert on Tuesday afternoon and evening, said National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP).

According to the NGCP in advisory, the Luzon grid will be placed under yellow alert from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., as well as from 8:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.

“A yellow alert is issued when the operating margin is insufficient to meet the transmission grid’s contingency requirement,” the NGCP said.

Current available capacity in Luzon is 14,963 megawatts, while the peak demand is 13,871 megawatts.

Fifteen power plants are on forced outage, five have been on forced outage since 2023, four between January and March 2024, and the other six since April 2024.

Meanwhile, four power plants are running at derated capacity.

Due to these outages, a total of 1,532.1 megawatts are unavailable to the grid.

The Visayas grid, on the other hand, will be placed under yellow alert from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.

The current available capacity in the area is 2,877 megawatts, with the peak demand placed at 2,646 megawatts.

A total of 21 power plants are on forced outage – one from 2022, two from 2023, two between January and March 2024, and 16 between April and May 2024.
