Philippines allowed to export more sugar to US

MANILA, Philippines — The United States has allowed the Philippines to export more sugar this year even if the latter has not used up its trade allocation in recent years.

In a statement uploaded on its website, the US Office of the US Trade Representative (USTR) said it had allotted an additional 25,300 metric tons raw value (MTRV) of sugar for fiscal year 2024. This is on top of the 145,235 MTRV earmarked for the Philippines this year as announced by the USTR in July last year.

The latest allocation forms part of the additional quantity of 125,000 MTRV reserved by the US for sugar-exporting countries nationwide. Brazil secured the largest allocation with 27,174 MTRV while Australia came third with 15,555 MTRV.

America increased export quantities of countries that are net importers of sugar subject to verifications of origin, the USTR said.

“Certificates of quota eligibility must accompany imports from any country for which an allocation has been provided,” it added. INQ
