Standard Chartered names new CEO in Philippines
MANILA -British banking giant Standard Chartered named Mike Samson as the new CEO of its domestic unit as it seeks to “deepen the bank’s corporate and institutional business in the Philippines.”
Samson, concurrently Standard Chartered Bank’s head of client coverage for Philippines and the Asean, will formally assume the role on Dec. 31 this year, subject to regulatory approval.
“Philippines is a strategic part of the bank’s Asean network with immense opportunities. My key focus is to drive our strategic agenda and leverage on our strong Asean presence to deliver sustainable growth and value for all our stakeholders,” said Samson, who is the bank’s second Filipino CEO after Lynette Ortiz.
Samson, who joined Standard Chartered in 2009, has 28 years of extensive domestic and international corporate experience, working across a range of industries, including insurance, power, infrastructure, oil and gas, telecommunications, media, technology, mining, transportation, airlines, real estate, logistics, consumer goods and healthcare.
Prior to this appointment, he was the CEO of Standard Chartered Bank Australia, in which he successfully helped strengthen the franchise and drive income growth, the statement showed.
Article continues after this advertisementHe was also the Asean and South Asia corporate finance head for Standard Chartered Bank (Singapore) Ltd. and the Asean regional head for leveraged and structured solutions.
Article continues after this advertisementSamson graduated from the Ateneo de Manila University with a BA degree (honours) in Management Economics, and a Master of Business Administration degree in finance and strategic management from the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania.
He is an alumnus of the Asian Financial Leaders Program of the Singapore Management University, according to the statement.
