BSP netted ‘hot money’ inflows of $887M in 2022
Short-term foreign investments that were registered with the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas tallied at net inflows of $887 million in 2022, a turnaround from net outflows of $574 million in 2021.
The BSP said similar reversals were observed in such investments that were placed in shares listed on the Philippine Stock Exchange as well as in government securities.
Full-year inflows shrank by 9.4 percent to $12.3 billion from $13.6 billion in 2021 as did outflows by 19.3 percent to $11.5 billion from $14.2 billion.
Of the outflows, 95 percent represented capital that was sent back to investors’ home countries, of which 73 percent went to the United States.
