Aboitiz Power to switch on 49-MW Maco battery system

Aboitiz Power Corp., the Aboitiz Group’s flagship business, has made progress in undertaking its energy storage and solar power projects in the Philippines.

During AB Capital Securities Inc.’s earnings call with the company held virtually, AboitizPower investor relations manager Ivy Manalang said the company had “acquired the necessary certifications and permits to start commercial operations” of the hybrid battery system this month.

Therma Marine Inc., a subsidiary of AboitizPower, is developing the 49-megawatt (MW) hybrid energy storage facility located in Maco, Compostela Valley. It is intended for ancillary services or power reserves.

Hybrid operations AboitizPower said in a regulatory filing earlier that the control system, which automates hybrid operations between the diesel and battery barges for contingency reserve ancillary service had been completed.

“It will serve [as] a model for future battery investments as well as hybrid renewable energy projects,” added Manalang.

Manalang also said the 94-MW solar power project in Bugallon, Pangasinan was 81 percent complete with zero lost time incident.

Solar power The P4.4-billion solar plant, which will rise on a 196-hectare site at Barangay Cayanga, about 13 kilometers southwest of the province’s capital, is scheduled to commence commercial operations by the first quarter of 2023.

Construction activities for photovoltaic module installation, control building, transmission line and Cayanga substation are ongoing.

Manalang also said the 159-MW solar power project in Aguilar, Pangasinan, was scheduled to begin commercial run by the third quarter of 2023. This will be the second solar venture of the company in the province following the Cayanga solar facility situated in Bugallon
