AboitizPower takes lead in transforming energy in the country

The Aboitiz Group has come a long way from being a hemp trading business in Leyte in the 1800s, to becoming one of the country’s biggest conglomerates.

Today, its diverse portfolio includes, among other investments, power generation and distribution, as well as renewable energy. The Group’s energy arm, AboitizPower, together with its partners,  is currently the largest owner and operator of renewable energy based on installed capacity.

More than just revolutionizing energy systems, AboitizPower is committed to a bigger and more holistic mission. To this end, its new purpose—the company’s north star—is “Transforming Energy for A Better World,” a world where there is energy abundance, zero poverty, and an environmentally sustainable society.

PEOPLE AT THE HEART. AboitizPower’s new Purpose, Transforming Energy for a Better World, is driven by empowered team members that believe in working towards the upliftment of each and every Filipino.

AboitizPower’s commitment to making a better world, it acknowledges, is not something that can be done overnight, so the company has since been making strides towards this goal. With its purpose, it hopes to tie up all its initiatives into one cohesive action plan that everyone, including its consumers, can understand and take part in.

The first step to arriving at a better world, according to AboitizPower’s vision, is energy transition.

“Our purpose statement recognizes that society requires a just energy transition,” Emmanuel V. Rubio, AboitizPower president and CEO, said at the official launch of the MTP last Sept. 1. “It also acknowledges that we must balance the change in our energy system with the human aspect of socio-economic development.”

AboitizPower President and CEO Emmanuel V. Rubio led the launch event of AboitizPower’s new Purpose, highlighting the active role the company will take in the holistic transformation of the country towards a better future.

The company knows that it’s not easy, and energy transition is far more complex than it seems. But Carlos Aboitiz, AboitizPower chief corporate services officer, believes they are up to the task and are already working towards finding solutions that will help them achieve their vision of a better world.

However, it’s not just about turning off all thermal energy sources and switching on as much renewable energy as possible. Earlier this year, AboitizPower’s energy transition strategy committed to a 50:50 balance of cleanergy and thermal capacities by 2030 to address the country’s energy trilemma–energy security, energy equity, and environmental sustainability.

It is also continually expanding its investments in renewable energy, further reinforcing its position as a leading player in the market. This includes stepping up its clean energy capacity to 4,600 megawatts (MW) from 940 MW within the decade.

AboitizPower already has 1,000 MW of disclosed RE projects—and this is just the beginning. Part of its plans to transform energy is through utilizing data and technology to have a more stable power system and to empower customers with information.

AboitizPower, after all, is part of Aboitiz Group’s Great Transformation (GT2025) goal to become the Philippines’ first “techglomerate” by leveraging technologies such as data science, artificial intelligence, and cutting-edge technologies.

One such way that AboitizPower is already adapting these innovations is through its digital transformation program aptly called “DigitaLeap,” which has since optimized its operations across all its businesses, including generation, distribution, and commercial operations.

On the consumer end, AboitizPower, in partnership with Aboitiz Data Innovation, launched its Data Innovation Program, which aims to help users make data-driven and informed decisions about greener options to something as practical as ways to lower electricity costs through analysis reports.

These commitments to sustainability is one of the reasons why AboitizPower has also been on the FTSE4Good Index Series for the fifth straight year. The FTSE4Good Index Series, created by global index provider FTSE Russell, measures the performance of companies based on strong Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) practices.

AboitizPower maintained its overall rating of 3.1 out of 5.0, mainly due to its performance in the social and governance themes, further evidence of its dedication to people and integrity, as a partner in good governance.

All these go to show that AboitizPower’s transformation is multidimensional and spans across everything from business and strategy, people and organizations, to technology innovation.

Rubio, during the launch of its purpose, reminded everyone of why AboitizPower continues to exist: “To create a difference in every Filipino’s life, a better Philippines, and, ultimately, a better world, by transforming energy.”
