MANILA, Philippines—Metro Pacific Tollways Corp. (MPTC) is set to open a new section of the Cavite Laguna Expressway (Calax) in the third quarter of 2021.

Called Calax Subsection 5, the 7.2-kilometer project is currently 93 percent finished and will link Sta. Rosa-Tagaytay Interchange to Silang East Interchange.

This will further allow Calax to serve around 5,000 vehicles per day, helping decongest Governor’s Drive, Aguinaldo Highway and Sta. Rosa-Tagaytay Road.

“It is also expected to help accelerate economic progress in Laguna and Cavite as it connects the two provinces,” said Roberto V. Bontia, president and general of MPTC subsidiary MPCALA Holdings, in a statement on Friday (April 30).

Calax, launched under the previous administration’s public private partnership program, will span 45 km and have eight interchanges. The access points are Kawit, Governor’s Drive, Open Canal, Silang (Aguinaldo) Highway, Silang East, Santa Rosa-Tagaytay, Laguna Boulevard, and Laguna Technopark.

Once completed, it will serve over 45,000 vehicles daily while cutting travel time between Cavite and Laguna from two hours to under an hour.

According to MPTC, toll structures at the upcoming Silang East interchange have been raised. The construction of drainage systems and installation of safety features, like road lights and guard rails, “remains on track.”

MPTC holds the concession rights for the CALAX, Cavitex, C-5 Link Expressway, North Luzon Expressway, NLEX Connector Road, Subic-Clark-Tarlac Expressway, and Cebu-Cordova Link Expressway in Cebu.

The company is a subsidiary of Manuel V. Pangilinan-led Metro Pacific Investments Corp.
