Globe switches on more 5G sites in Metro Manila

Globe Telecom has activa­ted more fifth generation (5G) cell sites across Metro Manila, laying the groundwork for the eventual shift to the newest mobile standard.

Globe, which rolled out pilot 5G services in 2019, said in a statement it widened its footprint in strategic areas.

These are in Quezon City: Commonwealth Avenue, Tandang Sora Road, Mindanao Avenue, Luzon Avenue; Manila: Abad Santos Avenue, Rizal Avenue, Honorio Lopez Boulevard; Marikina: Sumulong Highway, Bagong Silang; Caloocan: Quirino Highway, C3 Road, Congressional Road Extension; Valenzuela: Pan Philippine Highway, Tamaraw Hill Road; and Mandaluyong: Shaw Boulevard, Boni Avenue.

Other areas are Pasig: C. Raymundo Avenue, Medical City Bus Stop; Las Piñas: Alabang Zapote Road, Marcos Alvarez Avenue; Makati: Pasong Tamo, JP Rizal, and strategic areas in Magallanes Village; Taguig: Lawton Avenue, Philippine Army, McKinley Road and Forbes Park; Paranaque: East Service Road, Doña Soledad Avenue and Dr. A. Santos Avenue.

Globe said 5G sites were also activated along the South Luzon Expressway and North Luzon Expressway.

5G, which offers ultrafast internet speeds with minimal lag, is poised to replace the prevailing 4G/LTE standard over the next few years.

Users can only access this network using 5G-enabled devices and pricing is still prohibitive for many users.

Nevertheless, the expansion is part of the company’s commitment to offer better services, ahead of the entry of new competition in 2021 via Dito Telecommunity, the venture backed by Davao-based businessman Dennis Uy and China Telecom.

Globe said its 5G network was also recently made accessible in the central business districts of Bonifacio Global City, Makati, Rockwell Center and Ortigas as well as in strategic areas along Edsa and C5.

The service is open to postpaid and prepaid customers.
