Globe CHRO Ato Jiao is People Manager of the Year
Globe Telecom Chief Human Resource Officer Renato Jiao was named 2015 People Manager of the Year by the People Management Association of the Philippines for leading a culture transformation that became a key driver to strong business growth and made the company one of the best workplaces in the Philippines.
The People Manager of the Year Award recognizes the HR practitioner who has imbibed and modeled the strategic role of human resources in the organization he is connected with through exceptional people initiatives and programs addressing business challenges. Jiao was honored in awarding ceremonies held at the Marriott Hotel.
Globe Telecom’s culture transformation initiative ran in parallel to the company’s $700 million network and IT modernization program that started five years ago. “We believe that any telco can buy or build a new network and partner with the most advanced technology company. However, it takes a deliberate effort to create a strong culture of collaboration and instill renewed pride and ownership in each of our employees. We owe our successful business turnaround to our people who really made the difference. Ato’s strategic contribution in organizational change, leadership, and people development made this possible,” Globe President & CEO Ernest Cu said.
The culture transformation also brought to life the Circle of Happiness philosophy that espouses happy and engaged employees will delight customers by providing a wonderful service experience which creates new business for the company and adds value in shareholder returns.
As Globe nurtures its strong people culture, the company’s Sustainable Engagement Score got better year on year, jumping to 87% in 2014, compared to 68.58% in 2009, four percentage points higher than the global high performing norm. This sets a new benchmark even as the company delivered record-high business performance each year for the past five years.
“Under his leadership, the HR Group has become a true business partner of our line leaders with exceptional implementation of integrated HR strategies and creative deployment of relevant activities. Ato has consistently partnered with our senior leadership in building the foundation of a strong, resilient culture comprised of highly engaged employees, inspired to deliver remarkable business results,” Cu emphasized.
Jiao was also responsible in establishing a strong leadership bench to help sustain the gains in business performance through iLead, which integrates three targeted development tracks namely the Executive Development Program, Emerging Executives Program and Young Leaders Program, aimed at ensuring the Globe culture is continually enabled at every level. The Executive Development Program targets seasoned talents who have the potential to be senior leaders and business leaders. The Emerging Executives Program focuses on mid- career talents who demonstrate the potential to become senior executives while the Young Leaders Program looks at emerging talents who can assume larger leadership roles. In addition, Jiao initiated the establishment of the Globe University, which seeks to give its employees competitive advantage by sharpening their business acumen, technical expertise and communication skills.
Jiao has been a human resource executive with 29 years of demonstrated capabilities in general management and leveraging leading edge technologies, processes and human capital for competitive advantage. Before joining Globe Telecom in 2010, Jiao was the President of IBM Business Services, a position he held for six years. Prior to that, he occupied various positions in Procter & Gamble, where he last served as Director for Employee Services in Asia.
In 2014, Globe was recognized as Best Workforce by Sustainability Business Philippines and Best Place to Work in Asia by Asian Corporate Sustainability Excellence. These awards are testament to the initiatives that create wonderful work experience for the company’s more than 6,000 employees nationwide.
