/ 01:06 AM September 03, 2012

Maynilad Water Services Inc. installed a total of 2,423 kilometers of new pipes since 2007, effectively expanding its water distribution network in the West Zone to 6,998 kilometers by the first half of 2012.

More than P12 billion was spent for the network expansion, which benefited more than 466,400 households in Valenzuela, Malabon, Navotas, Caloocan, Manila, Makati, Pasay, Parañaque, Muntinlupa, Las Piñas and Cavite.

Aside from increasing water pressure and extending water supply coverage, Maynilad’s primary and secondary pipe-laying projects also generated employment opportunities for more than 131,900 people by the first half of this year.

“There are still areas in the West Zone that have no access to potable, surface water from Maynilad. The only recourse of residents in these areas is to use deep wells or pay for expensive water deliveries from private vendors,” said Maynilad President and CEO Ricky Vargas. “Our goal is to reach all areas in our concession so we aggressively pursue expansion efforts.”

Maynilad is a concessionaire of the Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System for the West Zone of the Greater Manila Area, which is composed of the cities of Manila (all but portions of San Andres  and Sta. Ana), Quezon City (west of San Juan River, West Avenue, Edsa, Congressional, Mindanao Avenue, the northern part starting from the districts of the Holy Spirit & Batasan Hills), Makati (west of South Super Highway), Caloocan, Pasay, Parañaque, Las Piñas, Muntinlupa, Valenzuela, Navotas and Malabon, all in Metro Manila; the cities of Cavite, Bacoor and Imus, and the towns of Kawit, Noveleta and Rosario, all in Cavite province.

Maynilad is a joint venture between Metro Pacific Investment Corp. and the Consunji family.
