DTI monitors groceries, markets to deter overpricing

MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) has started monitoring wet markets, grocery stores, supermarkets, and other retail outlets to deter overpricing, Trade Secretary Gregory Domingo said in a phone interview on Wednesday.

Domingo later said in a text message that many of the DTI’s workers were unable to go to work due to floods around Metro Manila but those on duty have been conducting price monitoring.

At the same time, however, Domingo said the agency would like to know if some enterprises have been having difficulty replenishing stocks due to logistical difficulties.  Domingo said the DTI would like to help them get supplies for their customers.

The Philippine Association of Supermarkets, Inc., said via email that its members “are here for the long haul” and do not raise prices overnight to take advantage of customers already having difficulty.
