Honda recalls 834 units of CR-V 2012

MANILA, Philippines—Honda Cars Philippines Inc. announced Thursday a voluntary recall of 834 units of Honda CR-V 2012 year model sold in the Philippines between April and July so that the manufacturer can replace the inner door handle and/or door latch. Worldwide, 314,000 units are being recalled.

No crashes or injuries have been reported related to the issue, HCPI said, even as 8 out of 314,000 units sold worldwide had doors opening without prompting. The 8 cases reported were in the US. Similar cases were not found in the Philippines so far, officials said.

HCPI said findings show that if the manual or power door lock is activated while an interior front door handle is being opened by an occupant, the cable connecting the interior door handle to the door latch mechanism may become loose and move out of position. There is a possibility that the cable can move far enough out of position to make the interior door handle inoperable and, in very extreme cases, may prevent the door from properly latching, HCPI said. If the latter condition occurs, it is possible for a front door to be closed but not fully latched, allowing the door to open while driving, HCPI said.

Officials said HCPI will start sending letters to CR-V 2012 owners in the Philippines starting Friday and free repairs will start on August 1 at authorized Honda dealers and service centers nationwide. There is no deadline set for the free repairs.

“Customers’ safety and the efficiency of the car is number one for us. We want customers to hear from us first,” marketing and sales general manager Roberto Y. Ong said at a briefing when asked why Honda announces voluntary recalls instead of having “quiet” recalls. He said sales have not been affected by voluntary recalls and he hopes customers appreciate and trust Honda for being proactive.

Concerned CR-V owners can get in touch with their respective dealers for service appointment. They may also call the HCPI’s hotline at 1-800-1000-HONDA or 8577240 or send an e-mail at customer_relations@hondaphil.com.

In March, HCPI recalled more than 20,000 units of CR-V to lengthen the low beam connecting wire.

Last year, HCPI recalled over 24,000 units of Jazz, City and CR-V for the replacement of power window master switch assembly.
