Beyond four walls, a balcony worth loving

Beyond four walls, a balcony worth loving

If you live in a small space, you might be blessed with a balcony that’s big enough to accommodate a few things that can turn your home into an oasis.

I always look at the balcony as a backyard of sorts. You can get quite creative by adding design pieces that make this outdoor space a cozy retreat, distinct from your interiors.

Create an outdoor living room

If the space is big enough, you can make it an extension of your living area by placing a small sofa against the balcony wall, along with an armchair and outdoor lamps. It’s always nice to watch the sunset from your balcony and breathe in some fresh city air!

Bring in greenery

You can add a low trellis with vines, a vegetable garden or even just potted plants. Having a small garden on your balcony can bring in a lot of good vibes. A vertical garden is also a beautiful option if you have the budget for it.

Choose flexible furniture

If the balcony is small, I suggest using folding chairs that you can easily tuck away when not in use. These can also be stored inside the unit when needed. Paired with a small table, these chairs can create a mini outdoor breakfast area.

Set up a reading nook

A balcony can also serve as a cozy and airy reading nook. A comfortable armchair with a small side table will do.

Add outdoor lighting and rugs

Stable, heavy outdoor lamps would make nice additions to your balcony. Make sure they are sturdy and heavy enough to withstand strong winds. To be safe, bring them indoors when not in use. Rechargeable lamps with weighted bases are a good option.

Outdoor rugs that can withstand the weather also make nice accents. You may try artificial turf grass, but I personally prefer outdoor rugs for the added patterns and colors.

Play with colors and patterns

Colorful and vibrant fabrics would look beautiful on your balcony, providing a nice contrast to your muted living room interiors. Bright colors and patterns would do the trick!

Bring in oversized pillows

Try adding oversized pillows that can also serve as floor cushions. These can make your balcony a more comfortable and inviting space.

Dress up your walls

If you’re on the ground or second floor and are blessed with a garden balcony, make use of your walls by adding some lightweight decor to give the space more personality.

Roll out a bar cart

If you have ample space, wheel in a bar cart for some outdoor fun!

Draw the eye outdoors

It’s always good to highlight your balcony from inside your living space by making the most of your windows and the view beyond. This draws attention to your outdoor area and makes it feel like a natural extension of your interiors. After all, it’s important to appreciate the view, so your balcony design should go hand in hand with your interior decor.
