International Container Terminal Services Inc. (ICTSI) said three of its engineers were injured following an accident at the company’s port facility in Gdynia, Poland, where a cargo vessel hit one of the firm’s container cranes.
In a disclosure, ICTSI reported that an accident occurred at the container terminal facility operated by the company’s subsidiary, Baltic Container Terminal Ltd. (BCT).
The company said sea vessel “Stena Spirit” allided—a shipping industry term used to describe a ship hitting a stationary object—with one of BCT’s Gantry Cranes. The incident caused the crane to “fall and damage another gantry crane.”
“Initial reports state that three engineers were injured and some empty dry container vans, portions of the quay and related infrastructure in the area were also damaged,” the company said.
The company said it did not expect the accident to have any significant effect on the facility’s operations and profitability.
The BCT operates the container terminal in Gdynia, Pomerania, Poland. BCT won its 20-year concession contract for the facility in 2003.
The Port of Gdynia is one of the largest passenger and cargo terminals in the Northern Europe’s Baltic Sea.
