Aboitiz-led consortium takes over CBK hydropower complex

MANILA, Philippines — The government completed on Monday the transfer of the massive hydroelectric power plant (HEPP) complex in Laguna to the consortium led by Aboitiz Power Corp.
Thunder Consortium comprises Aboitiz Renewables Inc., Sumitomo Corp. and Electric Power Development Co.
It has taken over the Caliraya-Botocan-Kalayaan (CBK) hydroelectric facility following its winning P36.266-billion bid.

“This plant is more than a power facility. It’s really a very, very strategic asset. It provides flexibility, stability, and resilience in a rapidly changing energy system,” said Sabin Aboitiz, chair of AboitizPower.
“It allows us to manage peaks in demand, support reserves and integrate more renewable energy into the grid without compromising reliability,” Aboitiz said in his speech during the ceremonial turnover on Monday.

“And as we add more solar and wind into the system, facilities like the CBK become even more critical,” he added.
The CBK complex is composed of the 39.37-megawatt (MW) Caliraya HEPP in Lumban and the 22.91-MW Botocan HEPP in Majayjay as well as the 366-MW Kalayaan I and 368.36-MW Kalayaan II pumped-storage plants — all in Laguna. INQ
