Philippines posts smaller-than-expected dollar deficit in 2025

MANILA, Philippines – The Philippines ended 2025 with a smaller dollar shortfall than expected, as inflows from other sources helped offset losses from its chronic trade deficit.

The country’s balance of payments swung to a $5.7-billion deficit last year, reversing a $609-million surplus in 2024, according to data from the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas.

The outcome was narrower than the central bank’s $6.2 billion deficit projection for 2025.
The balance of payments tracks the country’s transactions with the rest of the world.
