Chavit Coliseum opens in Vigan, Ilocos Sur

A new sports and events arena, the Chavit Coliseum, was officially inaugurated in the heart of Vigan, Ilocos Sur last Saturday, June 21, 2025.  The multi-purpose complex boasts a seating capacity of 9,000 to 10,000 and is envisioned as a venue for concerts, sporting events, and various large-scale gatherings.

Former Ilocos Sur Governor Luis “Chavit” Singson attended the inauguration, which coincided with his birthday celebration. Singson revealed that the coliseum was a long-held dream from his tenure as governor but lacked the necessary funding at the time. He credited the current provincial government, led by his younger brother Governor Jerry Singson, and the province’s improved financial standing for bringing the project to fruition. Ilocos Sur is now reportedly the fifth richest province in the Philippines and the eleventh fastest bankrolling provincial government.

The inauguration ceremony also featured the launch of “Chavit: Legend of the Philippines,” a biography of former Governor Singson written by Maciej Mikurda. A summary of the book says that Chavit Singson is a legend in the traditional sense: a person whose deeds and exploits are remarkable, well known, and much discussed within their own life time. He is one of the longest serving elected politicians in the Philippines, which a career spanning over 50 years, during which he played a role in events that changed Philippine history. Following the coliseum’s opening, a program included the oath-taking of newly elected provincial officials, including Governor Jerry Singson.

A significant portion of the event was dedicated to celebrating former Governor Chavit Singson’s 2025 birthday, during which he blew out candles on more than 50 birthday cakes.
