MANILA, Philippines – Customers of Razon-led Manila Water Co. Inc. will pay a bit less for their water consumption starting July after the government approved a decrease of 12 centavos per cubic meter in third quarter billings due to foreign currency adjustments.
Not so for customers of West Zone concessionaire Maynilad Water Services Inc., however, as the company’s foreign currency differential adjustment (FCDA) will slightly increase to P0.005 per cu.m. in the July-September period, which means higher water bills.

The Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System Regulatory Office (MWSS-RO) announced on Friday that its board had approved the FCDA adjustment for the water service providers.
It is a tariff mechanism that enables water firms to recover losses or return gains resulting from fluctuations in the peso’s value against foreign currencies.
These are used to pay foreign currency-denominated loans that are used to finance the expansion and improvement of water and wastewater services.
As to the different directions in the FCDA adjustments, the MWSS-RO said this was because the two companies do not have the same foreign currency loan mix.
“The peso weakened against the Yen and Euro but strengthened against the US dollar. Maynilad and Manila water have different foreign currency loan mix,” the MWSS-RO explained
