MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine government will ban poultry imports from Brazil due to reported cases of bird flu, Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. announced on Monday.
Brazil is the country’s top meat supplier.
“As of the moment, wala tayong (we do not have) a regionalization agreement with Brazil, so yes, we will have to ban the whole country from exporting chicken to us,” Tiu-Laurel said.
In an Associated Press report dated May 18, it said that Mexico, Chile, and Uruguay have already halted poultry imports from Brazil after the country confirmed its first bird flu outbreak on a commercial farm.
