BIZ BUZZ: Yangs renew ties with McDonald’s
A business partnership can be likened to a marriage, where each partner only wants the best for the other and both are committed to making a success of their union.
In this sense, George T. Yang and McDonald’s are a happily wedded couple that are about to renew their vows.
This, as George and his son, Kenneth Yang, chair and president, respectively, of McDonald’s Philippines, were once again granted the master franchise of McDonald’s in the Philippines by McDonald’s Corp. in the United States.
George has held the master franchise since he opened in 1981 the first McDonald’s store on Morayta Street, Manila.
In 2005, McDonald’s Philippines became a 100-percent Filipino-owned company with George and Kenneth Yang as the majority owners and Andrew Tan-led Alliance Global Inc. as their investment partners.
As the Yangs and McDonald’s renew their ties, they are on track to open their 800th McDonald’s store in the country this year after opening 65 more branches in 2024. Best wishes! —Tina Arceo-Dumlao

New CEO for Manulife China Bank Life
Manulife Philippines is shaking things up.
The insurance giant just tapped Amy Gochuico to be the new president and chief executive officer of Manulife China Bank Life (MCBL), a role she officially assumed on April 1.
Gochuico’s no rookie.
With over 30 years in the insurance game, including a two-decade-long reign in bancassurance, she’s known for turning businesses into gold mines.
Before this, she was Manulife Indonesia’s chief bancassurance officer, where she turned the company’s growth dial way up.
Now, she’s back in the Philippines and ready to make her mark.
“We’re beyond excited to have Amy back with us. She’s a powerhouse who drove big-time growth at Manulife Indonesia, and we know she’ll bring that same magic to MCBL,” Manulife Philippines president and chief executive officer Rahul Hora said in a statement.
From boosting partnerships to growing the distribution team and managing risks, she’s got big plans to make Manulife the undisputed top choice for customers. —Alden M. Monzon
