MANILA, Philippines – The government’s budget balance returned to a surplus in January, although the excess was smaller compared with a year ago.
Latest data from the Bureau of the Treasury (BTr) showed the Marcos administration posted a fiscal surplus of P68.4 billion in the first month of 2025, a reversal from the P329.5-billion deficit in December 2024.
But the January surplus was 22.27 percent lower than the P88 billion windfall recorded a year ago.
The BTr attributed this result to “sustained revenue growth alongside increased expenditures.”
