BIZ BUZZ: MPTC shake-up? All is well, says Lim
Metro Pacific Tollways Corp. (MPTC) just underwent another management shake-up over the weekend, but its new chief assured the public that everything is just fine.
When asked if the transition has been seamless, Jose Ma. Lim—who was appointed president and CEO effective March 1—said: “Yes, of course.”
He replaced Arrey Perez, who occupied the post for just about three months.

As previously reported here, Perez is now the Pangilinan-led tollway operator’s chief regulatory officer.
“We have decided to expand the role of Arrey to head the regulatory affairs for the whole group,” Lim said. “He (Perez) is still very much part of the team.”
This means Perez will mainly be dealing with government matters, which include the acquisition of right-of-way for their tollway projects. —Tyrone Jasper C. Piad
Enhanced’ retirement benefits for UP doctors
The Government Service Insurance System (GSIS), the state-run pension fund for government workers, will enforce a “groundbreaking policy change” enhancing the retirement benefits for medical professionals at the University of the Philippines (UP).
And considering the sacrifices of our medical frontliners during the pandemic, we’d say that the move is very timely.
The policy shift will specifically seek to address a longstanding concern of UP doctors who serve in dual capacities by recognizing the combined service hours of part-time medical professionals.
Under Board Resolution No. 88 of the GSIS, part-time professors at UP College of Medicine who also work as medical specialists at the Philippine General Hospital without compensation—or vice versa—will now have all their service hours counted toward their total length of government service for retirement benefits.
“This policy change reflects our commitment to recognize the full value of service that our members provide to the nation,” GSIS President and General Manager Wick Veloso said.
“By including previously unrecognized hours in their government service computation, we are acknowledging their true contributions to our country’s healthcare and education systems,” Veloso added. –– Ian Nicolas P. Cigaral
