MANILA, Philippines — Pangilinan-led Manila Electric Co. (Meralco) has activated a P220-million switching station to deliver the electricity needed for ST Telemedia Global Data Centres Philippines’ (STT GDC) hyperscale facility in Quezon City.

According to tech giant IBM, a hyperscale data center is a massive, highly scalable data center designed to handle extremely large workloads and data volumes, often associated with large tech companies like Google, Amazon, and Microsoft.

STT GDC Philippines is a joint venture between Globe Telecom, Ayala Corp. and Singapore-based STT GDC. Its data centers are located in Metro Manila, Cavite, and Davao City.

Data centers have been on the rise as they cater to businesses’ large-scale information and technology operations, supporting digital transformation particularly highlighted during the pandemic.

“Meralco works closely with data center operators such as STT GDC to cater to their unique requirements,” Meralco executive vice president and chief operating officer Ronnie Aperocho said.
