Maynilad readies P30-B water treatment project
Maynilad Water Services Inc. said its P30-billion water treatment project is proceeding as planned in time for the completion of the multibillion-peso Kaliwa Dam that is meant to address dwindling water supply in Metro Manila and nearby provinces.
Maynilad had earmarked about P30 billion in capital expenditures to build a water treatment facility in Teresa, Rizal, designed to make potable water from raw supply coming from the P12.2-billion Kaliwa Dam.
The Kaliwa Dam project in Rizal and Quezon provinces is capable of supplying 600 million liters per day (MLD) of water to Metro Manila and adjacent areas.

The dam is intended to provide an alternative source of raw water as the metropolis has been relying on the Angat Dam for about 90 percent of water requirements for decades.
Maynilad chief operating officer Randolph Estrellado said that for the planned treatment project, P10 billion had been allocated to build the plant itself and P20 billion for the conveyance line that would deliver water from one impounding area to another.
This entails a treatment plant with a capacity of 300 MLD and a 2.2-meter-diameter pipeline with a total length of around 50 kilometers to distribute water to Maynilad’s West Zone concession area.
Estrellado told reporters in an informal gathering last Friday that Maynilad would go through their own project mindful of the progress with the Kaliwa Dam’s construction.

According to the Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System, the Kaliwa Dam project is expected to be completed between 2028 and 2029.
“It’s necessary that before the completion of Kaliwa Dam, our projects are also finished because it takes about three years to build a treatment plant. Then, we still have to lay a pipeline from Teresa, Rizal, down to Morong, Binangonan and then Laguna [de Bay],” he added.
Estrellado said that so far, they have acquired the land where the treatment plant will rise and awarded the contracts to lay the pipes in Teresa and Morong. For next year, contracts will be awarded for the Binangonan pipe and the plant itself.
The planned treatment facility in Teresa forms part of Maynilad’s business plan to spend more than P163 billion between 2023 and 2027 to enhance its water and wastewater services.
In 2025, the company is targeting to spend up to P39 billion in capital outlays for the same purpose. INQ
