DOE: 19 projects under study for power grid interlinkage

The Department of Energy (DOE) approved 19 projects in September, with 17 of them under the renewable market, which would undergo a study meant to determine the grid system’s capacity to absorb new capacities.

In a document posted on its website, the DOE said the projects were endorsed to the National Grid Corp. of the Philippines (NGCP) for a system impact study.

Aside from determining the grid’s capacity, the study also intends to spot needed improvements, which may include building transmission lines, transformers or substations.

This batch of endorsements includes 17 clean energy projects, one waste-to-energy development, and one energy storage system. The renewable energy projects are composed of solar and wind developments.

The proposed projects are stretched across the Philippines, in the provinces of Aklan, Antique, Lanao del Norte, Laguna, Cebu, Mindoro, Tarlac, Manila, Batangas, Leyte, Pangasinan, Isabela and Camarines Sur.

Some of the projects are under First Gen Visayas Energy Inc. with its 100-megawatt (MW) Kuswagan Wind Power Project and Citicore Wind Energy Corp.’s 50-MW Camarines Sur CW Wind Power Project.

The wpd Philippines Onshore, Inc. would also lead the development of the 400-MW Ilocos Onshore Wind Power Project.

The Manila Integrated Environment Corp., meanwhile, wanted to put up a waste-to-energy facility in Tondo, Manila with a 100-MW capacity. Energija Sur 2 Inc., on the other hand, seeks to have a 40-MW battery energy storage system in Lumban, Laguna.

Since January, the number of issued endorsements is now at 148.
