NGCP seeks ERC approval for new lines in Luzon, Visayas

MANILA, Philippines — National Grid Corp. of the Philippines (NGCP) is awaiting the energy regulator’s approval for its proposed additional transmission projects in Luzon and the Visayas that would beef up the power grid.

In a statement on Thursday, NGCP said it sought the Energy Regulatory Commission’s (ERC) green light to pursue the 500-kilovolt backbone looping and extensions in Luzon and Leyte-Cebu Interconnection Lines 3 and 4.

The company has yet to provide more details on the projects, including their estimated costs and timeline.

According to a draft copy of the Transmission Development Plan 2022-2024 available on its website, however, the Cebu-Leyte Interconnection Lines 3 and 4 may include the construction and deployment of overhead lines and submarine cables in strategic areas from Cebu to Leyte.

NGCP added it was “more than ready” to accept additional generation capacity following the activation of some key power lines.

These include the Mariveles-Hermosa-San Jose 500-kV Transmission Line, the Cebu-Negros-Panay 230-kV Transmission Backbone, the Mindanao-Visayas Interconnection, and the Mindanao 230-kV Transmission Backbone extensions.

“Aside from strengthening our transmission network, the recently completed backbone projects allow NGCP to create room for additional generation capacity, whether from conventional or renewable power sources,” it added. INQ
