Maynilad owes Imus customers P3.9M for ‘water quality failure’

MANILA, Philippines — Thousands of Maynilad Water Services customers in Imus, Cavite will get a refund amounting to P3.9 million as the regulator found an issue with the quality and color of water the company distributes.

The regulatory office of the Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System (MWSS) said it recorded a water quality failure incident, specifically a “failure in color and residual chlorine” at the Anabu Modular Treatment Plant and its supply zone in Imus.

It said Wednesday a total of nine villages, or 3,494 water service connections, were affected.

Each water service connection will receive a P1,122.37 rebate, the regulator added.

Just last Tuesday, the MWSS ordered Maynilad to refund some of its Caloocan consumers P2 million due to a “total coliform failure” at a regulatory sampling point in Caloocan City in November 2023.

Maynilad said the two incidents were “isolated water quality noncompliance incidents” but it would abide by MWSS’ decision.

The company assured its consumers that necessary measures, such as intensified pipe flushing, accelerated pipe replacements and expedited leak repairs, and closure of illegal connections, were being taken to avoid similar issues in the future.
