Luzon, Visayas grids on yellow alert Friday, says NGCP

MANILA, Philippines — The Luzon and Visayas grids will again be placed on yellow alert on Friday afternoon and evening, said National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP).

This comes just a day after these grids were placed under both red and yellow alert.

According to NGCP’s advisory, the Luzon grid will be placed under yellow alert from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. and from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m.

“A yellow alert is issued when the operating margin is insufficient to meet the transmission grid’s contingency requirement,” the NGCP said.

Current available capacity in the Luzon grid is 14,548 megawatts, while peak demand is seen at 13,648 megawatts.

A total of 2,285.5 megawatts are currently unavailable to the grid as 21 power plants are currently on forced outage — three of which since 2023, three since between January and March 2024, and 15 since between April and May 2024.

Eight power plants are also currently running on derated capacities.

Visayas grid

Meanwhile, the Visayas grid will also be placed under yellow alert from 12 noon to 10 p.m. straight.

Current available capacity in the area, said the NGCP, is at 2,837 megawatts, with the peak demand at 2,621 megawatts.

Twenty-two power plants are currently on forced outages — one from 2022, two since 2023, two between January and March 2024 and 17 between April and May 2024.

Four are currently running on derated capacities.
